St Fintans Tear Up The Form Book with Fine Display

St Fintans on the ascent in their 23-9 win over CBC Monkstown

After a resounding victory over Skerries, St Fintans took to the hallowed turf of Donnybrook for the next round in their Senior Cup campaign against CBC Monkstown. With an almost full squad and Leinster man Ciaran Bolger warming the bench, St Fintans went behind to two soft penalties within the first ten minutes. But they settled to their task and opened their account with a penalty, followed by an excellent try by Shane Patterson, converted by Luke Ingle and which saw the Sutton men in front by half time.

But above all it was the shape and strength of the defence that was the difference and despite numerous spells of pressure from Monkstown after the interval, the Fintans line, marshaled by the ever present, Matthew Linehan, held firm. By this stage St Fintans were getting the upper hand and the strength of their loose play and epitomized by the front row of Donagh Walsh, Cian Macari-Kelly and Oisin Hogan was slowly wearing down the opposition.

By this time a prominent Ciaran Bolger was off the bench and further curbing the Monkstown enthusiasm, while the 10-12 axis of Cillian Cleary and Conor Cribbin were taking control of proceedings. A well worked try in the left corner by the consistent Dani de Bruin, converted by Ingle gave the Sutton side further breathing space and when Ingle nailed another penalty with his howitzer boot at the stroke of full time, Matthew Linehan’s St Fintans had had the final say. Cue jubilation and all hell broke loose! A great result.
