Howth At The Forefront In the Fight For Carbon Neutral

Howth’s Green Team, Complete With Sniffer Dog On Patrol

Chairman of Howth Tourism Sean Doran has thrown down the gauntlet and formed a unit of volunteers, christened  “the Green Team” who have pledged to put sustainability front and centre of their business operations at Dorans of Howth. “We’re very lucky to have such a precious environment in Howth to enjoy and to share.” said Doran, “we know there is no quick fix to sustainability and climate change, so it is so important that we and other businesses on the peninsula play our part and adapt to reduce the carbon emissions generated by our activities.”

Putting words into action, Dorans of Howth has recently joined forces with Sustainable Travel Ireland to reduce carbon emissions in their businesses which includes Doran’s Fish Shop and Deli, Octopussy Restaurant, The Oar House Restaurant and Howth School of Fish.

Dorans have already set clear, measurable and increasing targets that will see a reduction of 10% in both energy and water usage in the first year. The company is also changing to compostable only packaging and completely eliminating single use plastics, while the newly appointed Green Team is working towards Intermediate membership with Sustainable Travel Ireland and has a challenging target to be carbon neutral by the end of 2023!

“This is all about education and behavioural change and I think there is a huge opportunity for Howth to play a leading role in the fight for carbon neutrality”, says Sean Doran.

Formerly Ecotourism Ireland, Sustainable Travel Ireland is the only organisation in Ireland which is accredited by the Global Sustainability Tourism Council, a UN initiative that sets  global baseline standards for sustainable travel and tourism and which will help benchmark Sean Doran’s vision for a more sustainable Howth in the coming years.
