Howth Goats In Shock After Dog Attack
Four goats who suffered puncture wounds and “significant” bite injuries following a dog attack in Howth should make a full recovery, according to The Old Irish Goat Society.
The four animals are part of our local herd that have been stationed on the Head since last year to reduce the scrub and fire threat during the summer period.
Goat herder Melissa Jeuken said she was grateful that none of the herd had been killed in the dog attack but warned the dog attack could have put the whole project at risk.
Underlining the unpredictable nature of man’s best friend, the unsuspecting dog owner warned: “I didn’t think there was anything to be concerned about. Nothing prepared me for what happened – the dog was gone in an instant………………….. it happened so quickly and any training he had in terms of recall disappeared. He had one focus and one focus only – the goats.”
Dog owners are asked to be extra vigilant over the Christmas period while walking their dogs to ensure that our local flock enjoy a peaceful Christmas – and without unpleasant surprises.
So please keep your dog on a tight leash when walking in and around the Head.
