Local Man Sean Cribbin Helps Ireland Take Bronze in 7’s World Cup
Suttonian Sean Cribbin raises the tricolour on winning bronze in WRC Sevens
Congratulations to our own Sean Cribbin and the Irish 7’s squad on achieving history last weekend. Having already beaten host nation South Africa, a narrow defeat by the All Blacks saw them go head-to-head against Australia in a bronze medal showdown.
And Sean Cribbin made a vital contribution, levelling the contest just seconds into the second half, when his footwork allowed him to beat the cover before a strong fend saw him outmanoeuvre the last line of Aussie defence and hit the whitewash.
But it was left to Ireland’s Terry Kennedy to ultimately decide the spoils, when his double use of the boot and a kick pass out of the top drawer, was crucial to Ireland taking the lead. Australia did have time to respond, but a knock on off a quick-tap penalty handed Ireland a scrum with just seconds left. Cue touchline celebrations!
This is a great reward for the Irish sevens organisation, which coincidentally was put in place just seven years ago. This is also a huge honor for our own Sean Cribbin, a graduate of Suttonians’ nursery and a member of the stellar 1998 squad.
