Budget 2023 is tackling the areas causing greatest pain for families according to TD, Richard Bruton, who expressed confidence that the focus on Children, Carers, Fuel and Energy will ease major sources of concern for people. “We are finally seeing a proper framework for quality childcare coming into place. Pensioners who often lost out on Fuel Allowance by a few euro per week are now included. These are very progressive steps made possible by the success of businesses and workers” according to the Fine Gael TD.
Of less concern to Mr Bruton was the country’s over-reliance on the multinational tax take which has helped the Government increase income tax thresholds for workers, with the threshold for the top rate of tax increasing from €40,000 to €44,000 for a Single Parent, €49,500 for a couple with one earner and €80,000 for two earners – all of which will allow people keep more of their hard-earned money in their own pocket.
And while Mr Bruton confirms money is being held in reserve so the country can respond to emerging threats, Fine Gael’s self-congratulatory tone may ring hollow if a significant threat materialises.
