Seán Giles RIP- Unique and Irreplaceable
A native of Sutton and Howth, Sean Giles will be remembered as a man of humour, colour, with a quick wit and joyous nature. Raised in Offington Park, Sean’s affair with the sea started young, as a member of the fledgling Sutton dinghy club and it was there he learned to become a keen sailor before turning his hand to making boats.
A natural craftsman, with an eye for detail and an intuitive understanding of what worked and how it could work even better, his drive for better saw his boat making prowess recognised far and wide. And if this was only a pastime, his working life as fish merchant meant his name was widely known by both professionals and pleasure boat enthusiasts alike.
An avid car enthusiast, Seán built and displayed cars, he was a regular on the motor show circuit in Ireland and the UK and his knowledge of cars mixed with his appreciation for excellence meant each new model had an informed critic.
Closer to home he was a long time member of the Marine Hotel swimming group and while the daily swim was optional, the sauna, steam room and plenty of good conversation was a must. Here he regaled his audience with the mundane and the extraordinary and in short, it was the way he’d tell’em. He will be missed by all who knew him.
