As the RWC kicks off – It’s Plus La Meme Chose @ Suttonians RFC

As the Rugby World Cup gathers pace in France, there’s already plenty of fare on offer throughout Suttonians.

Under the baton of new President, Barry O’Brien, many events are in the offing and the season is already taking shape. Barry has been a member of the club for over 30 years and was a latecomer to rugby, only taking up the game in his late 20’s after a successful Rowing and Tug O’ War career took him to many far-flung locations.

A recently retired high-ranking member of An Garda Siochana, the new President brings a wealth of experience and energy to the role. By his own admission he was never the greatest of players in his day, the nuances of the laws of the game always evading him, somewhat ironic given his occupation, but at least we know Suttonians is in safe hands and ready for another successful season.

The underage section has been back for a week now, training Sunday mornings and Friday evenings and new members are always welcome.

At adult level, Club Captain James McConnon and Women’s Captain Brenda Barr will no doubt lead from the front and already pre-season friendlies have dusted off the cobwebs, which  in the case of the Women’s Team, involved a very enjoyable tour to Northern France. The leagues kick off on Saturday 16th, the men playing host to newly promoted Tullow who have ex-Irish international Sean O’Brien as their player coach, while the women host reigning league champions Railway Union later the same day.

The club expects to be a hive of activity during the RWC and all are welcome to enjoy the atmosphere for the big games. Let’s hope that Ireland and the men and women of Suttonians can give us something to shout about over the coming weeks!
