St Fintans Bloodied But Unbowed Out of Senior Cup
Terenure College 47 St Fintan’s HS, Sutton 3
Terenure College edged into the last eight of the Leinster Schools Senior Cup with a hard fought but ultimately convincing win against St Fintans, at Castle Avenue on Friday afternoon.
With torrential downpours and unrelenting winds, the most amazing aspect of this match was that it was played at all. However, St Fintans began brightly on the 4G surface and edged in front courtesy of a fifth-minute penalty from winger Luke Ingle. But later in the half Terenure eventually settled into their stride, however, with lock Cuan Doyle and influential inside centre Yago Fernández Vilar getting over for converted tries either side of the first-quarter mark.
There was a lot of industry and big shifts from the St Fintans side but they failed to make the most of their possession or the opportunities and by the interval were looking into a 14-3 deficit.
A strong start to the second half was needed from St Fintans, but instead it was Terenure who turned up the heat and with their pack now more in control at set piece, scrum and lineout, St Fintans were always fighting a rear guard action against the 10-time champions.
The worsening conditions of the second half also seemed to suit Terenure and they went over for a number of tries and a final score that did little justice to the endeavours of St Fintans.
This brings the St Fintans 2022 SCT odyssey to an end but with a league final (against Skerries) and the Vinny Murray Cup final (against CUS) still to play for, silverware seems the only fitting end to this seaon’s endeavours.
